Ten Katy ISD Schools were among an elite group of public schools across the state to be named to Texas Monthly's "Best Public Schools" list. A total of 574 elementary, junior high and high schools were published on the list in the magazine's December 2006 issue. Four elementary, four junior high and two high schools in Katy ISD made the list. Elementaries include Creech, Pattison, Williams and Winborn Elementary schools.

"You can accomplish great things when everyone works together, as a team, for the benefit of children," said Ronnie Lee, Williams Elementary principal.

Pattison Principal Debbie Barker said, "The teachers have worked hard to implement best teaching practices while also implementing a plan for those students who need further assistance as soon as a problem is noticed." "It is wonderful to see that the campus efforts to align writing instruction and student expectations are recognized as a model for other schools," added Patricia Paetow, principal of Creech Elementary.

The four Katy ISD junior highs to make the "Best Public Schools" list are Beck, Cinco Ranch, Katy and McMeans Junior High. "We have the best of all worlds - wonderful students, outstanding teachers and a supportive community. It's a winning combination," said Dr. Susan Rice, principal of McMeans Junior High. Additionally, Cinco Ranch and Taylor High Schools made the Texas Monthly list. Cinco Ranch High School Principal Bonnie Brasic said, "Our teachers work very hard to instruct and motivate our students to high levels of learning. We will take this accomplishment and run with it as we continuously work to get better and better."

The Austin-based National Center for Educational Accountability identified this year's 574 top schools. Formerly known as "Just for Kids," the research organization is a research arm of the University of Texas.

The NCEA identified schools that exhibit outstanding performance in comparison to similar schools across multiple grades and years. NCEA analyzed how students performed in measurable curricula areas, such as reading, writing, math, science and social studies. Each school's demographic makeup was also taken into account.
